A student's perspective on York

Ah, York, what a wondrous and elegant city entrenched in history and beauty. I mean, that's how you view York if you're a 57 year-old Chinese tourist with an over-sized Nikon. Yes, the Minster is lovely and yes the Shambles are reminiscent of the idyllic purity of Harry Potter, but if you're a student like myself living in York, it wears off within about a week when the odour of chocolate factory goes from being an exotic scent to a repugnant stench.

However, walking through York's city centre is truly wonderful; its beauty takes your breath away nearly as much as the queue outside Betty's Tea Room. £3.50 for a cup of tea. Mental.

This emphasises the fact that York is a tourist/retirement city, not a student city. If you've got a pocketful of money and an interest in culture then York is the city for you - unfortunately students don't usually possess these. All is not lost though, York offers a plethora of pubs and cocktail bars with an exemplary high street; the night-life may not be up there with the Newcastle's and Liverpool's, but student nights offer dodgy vodka for a quid. Fantastic.

York is a vibrant, exciting city with plenty going on and an expanding student population, so who knows maybe us common students will knock the invisible aristocracy off its perch. I hope so.
